It puts a gap and a small decision between one drink and the next, so fewer fit into the same evening. I haven't seen it tested on its own. Evidence: worth trying
Why fewer matters for the night: 4,098 Finnish employees wore heart monitors for 12,411 nights. After evening drinking, their heart rate stayed higher in the first three hours of sleep, and their recovery score, the monitor's measure of how well the body was resting, dropped. After a small amount, heart rate was up about 1.4 beats a minute. After a lot, about 8.7. Evidence: decent People reported their own drinks and nobody was assigned to drink, so it's a strong hint, not proof.
If you drink heavily every day, don't stop suddenly. Talk to a doctor first. Coming off alcohol all at once can cause seizures. Evidence: solid

Count it as you pour it
Each time you open or pour a drink, add a line to a note on your phone with the time. Read the note the next morning.

Drinking
Decide the drink before you get home
Before you leave work, write one if-then line for the evening. If I want a second beer, I drink a glass of water first, then decide.

Pick the drink-free days before the week starts
On Sunday, choose the days this week you won't drink and put them in the calendar. Then Wednesday at six isn't a decision.
