In a small study, people who only imagined doing maximal contractions, fifteen minutes a day, five days a week for twelve weeks, got about thirteen per cent stronger in that muscle. The gain was the brain learning to drive the muscle harder, not muscle growing. A group that trained for real, on a smaller muscle, gained a good deal more than the group imagining it.
